A Liver Function Test (LFT) is a blood test that checks how well your liver is working by measuring liver enzymes, proteins and bilirubin. Since the liver performs hundreds of functions - filtering toxins, producing clotting factors, digesting fats - the LFT is one of the primary tools doctors use to detect early liver stress or damage.
It can help your doctor assess
Hepatitis (viral, alcoholic, drug-induced), fatty liver disease (NAFLD/AFLD), cirrhosis, bile-duct obstruction/gallstones, and jaundice of various causes.
This test may be considered for:
Whether this test is right for you depends on your symptoms, medical history and the reason for testing - your doctor can advise.
SGPT/ALT, SGOT/AST, ALP, GGT, total/direct/indirect bilirubin, total protein, albumin, globulin, and the A/G ratio.
SGPT/ALT
Liver Enzymes
The most liver-specific enzyme - rises when liver cells are damaged or inflamed.
SGOT/AST
Liver Enzymes
Also found in heart and muscle, so it can rise from liver disease or muscle/heart injury.
ALP
Liver Enzymes
Raised mainly with bile-duct blockage, gallstones, or bone conditions.
GGT
Liver Enzymes
A sensitive marker for alcohol-related liver stress and bile-duct issues.
Albumin
Liver Proteins
The main protein the liver produces. Low levels suggest the liver isn’t producing enough protein, seen in chronic liver disease.
Globulin & A/G Ratio
Liver Proteins
Globulin reflects immune-system and liver protein production; the ratio helps assess overall liver and immune balance.
Total, Direct & Indirect Bilirubin
Bilirubin
A waste product from red-cell breakdown, processed by the liver. High levels cause jaundice and point toward either liver-cell damage or bile-duct blockage depending on the direct/indirect split.
How to read your result
Your report should be read using the reference interval, unit and method shown by the performing laboratory. A result outside a reference interval does not automatically establish a diagnosis, and a result inside the interval does not rule out every health problem. Clinical interpretation depends on symptoms, history and other findings.
| Marker | Result | What it may be associated with |
|---|---|---|
| SGPT/ALT | High | May indicate viral hepatitis, fatty liver, alcohol-related damage, or drug-induced liver injury. |
| GGT | High | A sensitive marker for alcohol-related liver stress or bile-duct issues. |
| Albumin | Low | May indicate chronic liver disease, malnutrition, or kidney protein loss. |
| Total Bilirubin | High | Causes jaundice; can result from liver-cell damage, bile-duct blockage, or increased red-cell breakdown. |
If a result is outside the range
If the Liver Function Test (LFT) is reported as high, low, positive, negative or otherwise outside the laboratory's stated interval, the meaning depends on the specific test and the reason it was ordered. Your clinician may consider repeat testing, related investigations or other clinical information before deciding what the result means.
Limitations of this test
An abnormal LFT signals that something needs attention but doesn’t pinpoint the exact diagnosis on its own - your doctor will combine it with your symptoms and, if needed, imaging (ultrasound) or further blood tests.
An abnormal result does not by itself mean you have a particular disease. Your doctor interprets results together with your symptoms, history and other tests.
| Parameter | Reference range | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| SGPT/ALT | Less than 35 | U/L |
| SGOT/AST | 17 - 59 | U/L |
| ALP | 38 - 126 | U/L |
| GGT | 15 - 73 | U/L |
| Total Bilirubin | 0.2 - 1.2 | mg/dL |
| Albumin | 3.5 - 5.0 | g/dL |
Typical adult ranges for guidance. Reference intervals vary with the laboratory method, age and sex - always read your result against the range printed on your own report.

Prepare
Follow the preparation steps above for this test.
Sample collection
A trained phlebotomist collects the sample at your home - no extra charge.
Laboratory processing
Your sample is processed in our laboratory and reviewed by a pathologist.
Report
Your report is shared on WhatsApp and email, usually within 24 hours.
For a blood-based test, a small blood sample is collected by a trained healthcare professional, usually from a vein in the arm. The collection normally takes only a few minutes; mild temporary discomfort or bruising can occur at the puncture site.
Alcohol in the past 24-48 hours, recent strenuous exercise, and several common medicines can all raise liver enzymes without indicating disease. Always tell your doctor about your alcohol use and current medications.
Laboratory results are interpreted together with your symptoms, medical history and other investigations. If your results are significantly abnormal, or you have symptoms that worry you, discuss them with a qualified doctor promptly.

No fasting is required for a standalone LFT. If it’s being done alongside fasting tests like blood sugar or lipid profile, your doctor may ask you to fast for that combined panel.
A high SGPT suggests liver cells are inflamed or damaged - common causes include viral hepatitis, fatty liver, alcohol use, or certain medicines. A mildly raised value doesn’t always mean serious disease.
Yes, significantly. Alcohol can raise GGT and AST even with moderate drinking in the 24-48 hours before the test. Always inform your doctor about your alcohol intake.
High bilirubin causes jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes) and can result from liver-cell damage, bile-duct blockage, or excess red blood cell breakdown - your doctor will use the direct/indirect split to narrow this down.
A normal LFT doesn’t rule out all abdominal issues - gallbladder problems, pancreatitis or IBS can occur with normal liver enzymes. Discuss ongoing symptoms with your doctor for further evaluation.
Healthy adults typically don’t need routine LFTs unless as part of a general checkup. Those with known liver disease, on hepatotoxic medication, or heavy alcohol use may need testing every 1-3 months or as advised.
Not on its own. Abnormal enzymes, low albumin and raised bilirubin in someone with known liver disease can raise suspicion, but imaging and specific tumour markers (like AFP) are needed to investigate further.
Low albumin suggests the liver isn’t producing enough protein, which can be a sign of significant liver dysfunction, malnutrition, or kidney protein loss.

The Liver Function Test (LFT) may be ordered when a healthcare professional needs information about the condition or health area assessed by this test. The Liver Function Test assesses your liver through enzymes, bilirubin and proteins. It helps detect fatty liver, hepatitis and other conditions, often before you feel any symptoms.

The test may be relevant for people whose symptoms, medical history, screening needs or treatment monitoring match the purpose of the Liver Function Test (LFT).
