This is the most direct, economical way to find out if you carry thalassaemia or a common haemoglobin variant. The haemoglobin profile measures the fractions of different haemoglobins, where a raised HbA2 or the presence of HbS or raised HbF is the carrier signal. The blood count and smear show the typical small, pale cells that accompany it. It does not include iron studies, so if the red cells are small and you have not had iron checked, a doctor may ask for those to avoid mixing up iron deficiency with carrier status. For couples, it is a sensible early step before planning a family.
