Blood Sugar Unit Converter

Blood glucose is reported in mg/dL in India and the US, and in mmol/L in the UK, Europe and many glucometers. This converter switches between the two and tells you whether a reading falls in the normal, prediabetes or diabetes range.

Convert glucose between mg/dL and mmol/L and check the range.

Prediabetes range

Fasting: normal below 100, prediabetes 100-125, diabetes 126+ mg/dL. Two hours after a meal: normal below 140, prediabetes 140-199, diabetes 200+. Diabetes is confirmed with repeat testing or an HbA1c.

This tool is for general information only and is not a diagnosis. Please consult your doctor about your results.

How the conversion works

Glucose has a fixed molecular weight, so 1 mmol/L equals 18.016 mg/dL. To convert mg/dL to mmol/L divide by 18; to go the other way multiply by 18.

Normal blood sugar ranges

Fasting: below 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L) is normal, 100-125 is prediabetes, 126 or above suggests diabetes. Two hours after a meal: below 140 mg/dL is normal, 140-199 prediabetes, 200 or above diabetes. A random reading of 200 or more with symptoms also suggests diabetes.

One reading is not a diagnosis

Diabetes is confirmed with a repeat fasting test, an HbA1c, or a glucose tolerance test. Illness, stress, steroids and a late dinner can all push a single reading up.
