HbA1c to Average Blood Sugar Converter

HbA1c shows your average blood sugar over the past 2-3 months as a percentage. This converter turns that percentage into an estimated average glucose (eAG) in mg/dL - the same unit as your glucometer - so the number is easier to understand.

Convert HbA1c % to estimated average glucose (mg/dL) and back.

Formula: eAG (mg/dL) = 28.7 × HbA1c − 46.7 (ADAG study, used by the American Diabetes Association).

How the conversion works

The converter uses the formula from the ADAG study that the American Diabetes Association uses: eAG (mg/dL) = 28.7 × HbA1c − 46.7. For example, an HbA1c of 7% equals an average glucose of about 154 mg/dL.

HbA1c ranges

Below 5.7% is normal, 5.7-6.4% indicates prediabetes, and 6.5% or above (confirmed on repeat testing) is used to diagnose diabetes.

Why your glucometer average may differ

Finger-stick readings capture single moments, often before meals, while HbA1c reflects every hour of the day and night. Conditions that change red blood cell lifespan - anaemia, recent blood loss, pregnancy or kidney disease - can also make HbA1c read higher or lower than your true average.

Frequently asked questions

What average blood sugar is HbA1c 6.5?

An HbA1c of 6.5% corresponds to an estimated average glucose of about 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L).

Do I need to fast for an HbA1c test?

No. HbA1c is not affected by your last meal, so it can be done at any time of day.

How often should HbA1c be checked?

Usually every 3 months while diabetes treatment is being adjusted, and every 6 months when it is stable. Adults at risk should check at least once a year.
